OraSure to Donate OraQuick Rapid HIV-1 Antibody Test for National HIV Testing Day on June 27th; Interview Footage and B-Roll Available via Satellite Uplink Wednesday, June 25

June 24, 2003 at 2:12 PM EDT

BETHLEHEM, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 24, 2003--OraSure Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq NM:OSUR), the market leader in oral fluid diagnostics, announced today that its OraQuick(R) Rapid HIV-1 Antibody Test will be donated to numerous locations across the United States to conduct free HIV testing in observance of National HIV Testing Day on June 27, 2003. This will mark the first time in the history of National HIV Testing Day that a rapid, point-of-care HIV test will be made available for this nationwide effort.

June 27, 2003 will mark the ninth annual National HIV Testing Day, a day when all Americans are urged to get tested to determine their HIV status. The National Association of People With AIDS (NAPWA) created the campaign in response to the growing number of new HIV infections among specific populations in the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ("CDC"), an estimated 200,000 people in the United States currently have the HIV virus but may be unaware that they are infected. Because of its ease of use and convenience, OraQuick(R) can help increase access to early diagnosis and referral for treatment and prevention services, particularly in high-HIV prevalence settings.

OraSure has partnered with the following specific sites in observance of National HIV Testing Day, which will be offering free HIV testing with the OraQuick Rapid HIV-1 Antibody Test:

    -- Whitman-Walker Clinic, Washington, D.C.

-- Our Common Welfare, Atlanta, Georgia

-- The County of Los Angeles, Department of Health Services,
Office of AIDS Programs and Policy and the L.A. Gay and
        Lesbian Center, Los Angeles, California

-- Philadelphia AIDS Consortium, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

-- Mosaic Family Services, Dallas, Texas

-- Indiana State Department of Health, Indianapolis, Indiana

-- Maricopa County Department of Public Health, Phoenix, Arizona

-- Nebraska Health and Human Services System, Lincoln, Nebraska

"We are honored to be working with so many dedicated organizations for National HIV Testing Day to help stem the spread of the HIV virus," said Mike Gausling, Chief Executive Officer of OraSure Technologies. "As the only FDA-approved, CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvements Amendments of 1988) waived, rapid point-of-care HIV-1 test, we hope OraQuick(R) will help increase the number of people who get tested and learn their HIV results. We will continue to work in partnership with local, state and national agencies to help make this happen."

OraQuick(R) is the first FDA-approved rapid, point-of-care test designed to detect antibodies to HIV-1 in finger-stick whole blood within approximately 20 minutes. OraSure received FDA approval of the OraQuick (R)test on November 7, 2002. On January 31, 2003, OraSure received a CLIA waiver for the test, permitting its use by more than 180,000 sites in the United States, including outreach clinics, community-based organizations and physicians' offices.
