CVS Caremark is the only fully integrated pharmacy health care company in the United States. Our offerings across the entire spectrum of pharmacy care allow us to provide greater convenience and choice for patients, improve health outcomes, and lower overall health care costs for plan sponsors and participants. As one of the country’s largest pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), we provide plan sponsors and participants access to a network of approximately 60,000 pharmacies including over 7,000 CVS/pharmacy stores. CVS Caremark is a market leader in mail order pharmacy, retail pharmacy, specialty pharmacy, and retail clinics, and our clinical expertise includes one of the industry’s most comprehensive disease management programs. We are also a leading provider of Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans.
At CVS Caremark, our vision is to improve the quality of human life. We strive to do this by providing expert care and innovative solutions in pharmacy and health care that are effective and easy for our customers and plan sponsors. With U.S. health care expenses expected to double over the next decade, plan sponsors are looking for innovative ways to promote healthy outcomes and manage costs. CVS Caremark is taking on this challenge by integrating our leading pharmacy benefit management company with the nation’s largest chain of retail pharmacies to offer unparalleled service and access. Through our Proactive Pharmacy CareTM offerings, we have developed an earlier, easier, more effective approach to engaging plan participants in behaviors that can help lower costs, improve health, and save lives. For more information, visit our Proactive Pharmacy Care Web site.
As we integrate our PBM offerings with CVS/pharmacy’s unmatched retail presence, we’re also improving adherence and taking our differentiated offerings to the next level. The vast majority of patients prefer to get their information through face-to-face interaction at the pharmacy. Those that do can draw upon the expertise of our 25,000 in-store pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. But, the strength of our combination doesn’t end there. Regardless of how CVS Caremark plan participants interact with us – through mail order, in our stores, over the phone, or on the Web – our back-end Consumer Engagement Engine will provide a single, unified view of their therapy history. As a result, identifying and communicating participant-specific cost reduction and health improvement opportunities will be easier than ever.
Our Pharmacy Services Business
As one of the nation’s largest PBMs, CVS Caremark plays a critical role in the way health care is delivered today. We do this, in part, through our traditional strengths in generic substitution, mail service, network management, clinical programs, and specialty guideline management. As a pharmacy benefits manager, we manage the dispensing of pharmaceuticals through our mail order pharmacies and national network of retail pharmacies to eligible participants in the benefit plans maintained by our customers and utilize our information systems to perform, among other things, safety checks, drug interaction screenings and brand-to-generic substitutions. To access Caremark’s Web site, visit www.Caremark.com.
Our specialty pharmacies support individuals that require complex and expensive drug therapies. Our specialty pharmacy business includes mail order and retail specialty pharmacies that operate under the Caremark® and CarePlus CVS/pharmacy™ names. Substantially all of our mail service specialty pharmacies have been accredited by The Joint Commission.
We also provide health management programs, which include integrated disease management for 27 conditions, through our Accordant Care™ health management offering. The majority of these integrated programs are accredited by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. In addition, through our SilverScript Insurance Company and Accendo Insurance Company subsidiaries, we are a leading national provider of drug benefits to eligible beneficiaries under the Federal government’s Medicare Part D program.
Our Retail Pharmacy Business
CVS/pharmacy is the nation’s largest retail pharmacy chain. With more than 45 years of dynamic growth in the retail pharmacy industry, our retail pharmacy business generates nearly 70% of its revenue from sales of prescription drugs and is committed to providing superior customer service by being the easiest pharmacy retailer for customers to use. Our stores fill more than one out of every six retail prescriptions in the United States, and more than one out of every five prescriptions in the markets we serve. To shop online, visit www.CVS.com.
Our retail pharmacy business also provides health care services through our MinuteClinic health care clinics. Our health care clinics utilize nationally recognized medical protocols to diagnose and treat minor health conditions and are staffed by certified nurse practitioners and physician assistants. We believe our clinics provide quality services that are quick, affordable and convenient. It is one of the only retail clinics to have been accredited by The Joint Commission. To learn more or find a location, visit MinuteClinic’s Web site.
Our proprietary loyalty card program, ExtraCare®, has well over 50 million active cardholders, making it the largest and most successful retail rewards program in the country. The program is free and members receive benefits such as instant targeted offers that appear on register receipts in addition to earned Extra Bucks coupons. ExtraCare cardholders can also opt-in to register an email address with their secure account online, to receive additional coupons and health and beauty information directly in their email inboxes each week. To learn more about the program, visit our ExtraCare Web site.
Across our entire enterprise, we employ approximately 215,000 colleagues in 44 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. As of December 31, 2008, we operated 6,923 drugstores (of which 6,857 included a pharmacy) working primarily under the CVS/pharmacy® or Longs Drug® names, 560 MinuteClinic® locations (of which 534 were located in CVS/pharmacy stores), 58 retail specialty pharmacy stores, 19 specialty mail order pharmacies, six mail service pharmacies, and our CVS.com® and Caremark.com websites.
