TOLEDO, Ohio, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The people of Sunoco (NYSE: SUN) are deeply saddened by the events of September 11th. We want to assure the public that our refineries, pipelines and trucks are operating normally, and supply is adequate.

World markets, including petroleum markets, have been affected by the uncertainty brought by Tuesday's events. While there will be some price fluctuations, supplies have not been disrupted in this region.

The emotional response yesterday afternoon and evening in Ohio and Michigan caused a strain on supply as approximately five times the amount of people who typically fill up in a given day flocked to stations on unfounded rumors and fears that the supply would be disrupted.

Sunoco's current appraisal is that markets are adequately supplied and there is no reason for excessive price increases. Sunoco is appalled at recent, isolated incidents of price gouging. No one should try to take advantage of this difficult situation.

To understand pricing yesterday, it is important to understand that Sunoco sets the pricing at only 10 percent of its more than 900 stations in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. The majority of Sunoco stations in these states are independent dealers and distributors, who set their own price.

While Sunoco has no control over the price at dealer and distributor locations, Sunoco is urging our dealers and distributors to price responsibly.

At Sunoco's company-owned stations, the prices have remained stable. Sunoco will continue to price according to the local markets.
