|Hanger Clinic patient and double below-knee amputee skiing again with custom-designed prosthetic legs|
Lafayette, Colo., Feb. 9, 2016 – Erik Bowen, an active Lafayette, Colorado resident and double below-knee amputee, was recently fit with custom-designed, adjustable prosthetic sockets and feet that will allow him to ski upright.
Lafayette-area journalists attended Bowen’s clinical follow-up appointment with his Hanger Clinic Clinician Chad O’Connor, CP. Following are some of the resulting news stories:
About Bowen: In December 2013, Erik contracted a severe strep infection and pneumonia, which caused his body to go into septic shock. Erik fought the infection for several months, but limited blood flow to his extremities ultimately necessitated the amputation of both his legs below the knee in April 2014. With the support of his wife, Erik wasted no time jumping back in to his active lifestyle: he and his wife were superbike race marshals at the Salinas, Calif. Laguna Seca Raceway in July 2014, and Erik, who is an avid golfer, played his first nine holes of golf following his amputation in August 2014. After an unsuccessful attempt to ski using the prosthetic feet he uses for everyday use in December, Erik talked to his prosthetist about developing an alternative, custom-designed solution that would get him back on the slopes.
