Charleston, S.C., April 25, 2013 – Carrie Davis, Hanger Clinic Upper Extremity Patient Advocate and National Coordinator of Amputee Empowerment Partners, a national peer-to-peer amputee support group, was presented with the distinguished International Margarette Golding Award at an Inner Wheel Foundation luncheon on Friday, April 19th for her dedication to the Foundation. Davis’s receipt of the award marks the first time in the award’s 12-year history it has been given to someone in the United States.

The Foundation provides funding for pediatric myoelectric prosthetic arms and hands, and partners with Hanger Clinic to design and fit the prostheses on children who might not otherwise have access to this level of prosthetic intervention. Davis, who was born with a below-elbow congenital limb deficiency, works to teach the children how to utilize their new prostheses for activities of daily living such as how to tie their shoes, put their hair in a ponytail, and use a knife and a fork.

The Margarette Golding Award was created in honor of the founder of the Inner Wheel, and was established to recognize commendable personal service through the organization, or in the community. According to the official award criteria, this honor is given to recipients who have been involved with a variety of charities or organizations for a very long time, often involving a great deal of commitment on a very regular basis. Additionally, the recipient must have made great personal sacrifices for the benefit of others.
