|Scripps Names Experienced Media Lawyer, Journalist as Associate General Counsel|
CINCINNATI, June 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- David M. Giles, an experienced media lawyer and former newspaper reporter, has been named associate general counsel for The E. W. Scripps Company (NYSE: SSP). His appointment became effective June 1.
In the newly created position, Giles will work closely with managers of Scripps newspapers and broadcast television stations on a variety of legal matters, including First Amendment, contract, litigation, labor and employment matters.
Giles reports to A. B. Cruz III, who recently joined Scripps as senior vice president and general counsel. Scripps has expanded its in-house legal function commensurate with the company's rapid growth and the heightened emphasis on corporate governance and regulatory compliance.
"Dave Giles is no stranger to Scripps having served as outside counsel to the company for many years," Cruz said. "He brings critical legal skills and experience to this important position and will undoubtedly help us achieve our legal and business objectives."
Giles, 43, previously represented Scripps as an associate with the law firm of Baker & Hostetler, where over a 10-year period he worked with nearly all of the company's newspapers and television stations. He also represented nationally known media clients such as FOX Television and Granite Broadcasting Co.
Immediately prior to joining Scripps, Giles provided legal counsel to several clients as head of Strategic Media Management, a Denver-based consulting firm he established. Giles provided a number of specialized legal and consulting services, including training seminars for editorial members of the Inland Press Association.
Giles is a 1992 graduate of Washington and Lee School of Law. He has a master's degree in journalism from the University of Kansas and a bachelor's degree in government from St. Lawrence University. Before completing his law degree, he worked four years as a reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer and USA Today. He is a member of the Virginia, District of Columbia and Colorado state bars.
