KNOXVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 21, 2001--Susan Packard, president of Scripps Networks New Ventures, has been elected to the Scripps Howard Foundation board of trustees.
Dedicated to excellence in journalism, the Scripps Howard Foundation, the philanthropic arm of The E.W. Scripps Company, is a leader in industry efforts in journalism education, scholarships, internships, literacy, minority recruitment/development and First Amendment causes.
The Foundation's mission is to help build healthy communities and improve the quality of life through support of sound educational programs, strong families, vital social services, enriching arts and culture, and inclusive civic affairs, with a special commitment to the communities in which E.W Scripps does business.
Packard joins the Scripps Howard Foundation board of trustees which includes, Drew Berry, Colleen C. Conant, Clyde Gray, Julia Scripps Heidt, Pamela Howard, Paul F. Knue, John F. Lansing, Cindy Scripps Leising, Angus McEachran, Susan J. Porter, J. Robert Routt, Maggie Scripps, Robert P. Scripps, Paul K. Scripps, Dan K. Thomasson and Foundation president and CEO, Judith G. Clabes.

As president of Scripps Networks New Ventures, Packard is responsible for developing new networks, new media applications (including broadband, video-on-demand and interactive television), strategic partnerships and other ventures. Previously Packard served as chief operating officer of Home & Garden Television (HGTV) network and executive vice president of Scripps Networks, responsible for the business operations of HGTV. HGTV is the only network devoted to providing entertaining how-to information from some of America's best homebuilders, decorators, gardeners and craft experts.
As executive vice president of Scripps Networks, Packard had responsibility for the Affiliate Sales, International and New Business Development departments for HGTV, Food Network and the Do It Yourself (DIY) network. The E.W. Scripps Company is managing partner of the Food Network and owns and operates HGTV, DIY and Fine Living, a new network launching in 2001.
Packard began her extensive sales, marketing and management career in 1978 at Burke Marketing Research in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1980 she joined HBO, and during the succeeding eight years she moved up the ranks serving in various sales, marketing and management capacities in their Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles offices.
Before joining HGTV, Packard was part of the start up team for CNBC, where she served as vice president of affiliate relations and national accounts. In addition to her U.S. duties, she also oversaw all of CNBC's business activities in Canada. After six years at CNBC, she joined HGTV in early 1994 and oversaw its launch as one of the most successful new cable networks.
Packard also has contributed her time, energy and experience to the start up of many industry organizations, such as: ADI-wide marketing co-ops, the Southern California Cable Television Association, and state and regional CTAMs. She currently serves on the National CTAM Marketing Board, on the National Women in Cable & Telecommunications Board, and on an advisory committee to the National Cable Television Association (NCTA). Packard is the recipient of the 1998 Woman of the Year Award presented by Women in Cable & Telecommunications. In 1999 she was recognized by Electronic Media as "One of 12 to Watch" in all media businesses. In 1999 Cablevision magazine also cited her as one of the "12 most powerful women in cable." In 2000 Packard was included among the CableFAX 100 most influential people in the cable industry. She is active with the University of Tennessee and is on the Board of their Visitors Bureau. She is also contributing her efforts toward the cable and telecommunications curriculums at the University of Tennessee. She has guest lectured at the University of Tennessee, Michigan State University and Miami University Oxford Ohio. She currently serves on the YMCA of Metropolitan Knoxville Board of Directors and has served on the Junior Achievement of East Tennessee Board.
She received her bachelor's degree in advertising and her master's degree in telecommunications from Michigan State University. Packard resides in Knoxville with her husband and son.
