| Scripps July Revenues Increase 13 Percent |
CINCINNATI, Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The E.W. Scripps Company's consolidated revenues increased 13 percent in July to $133 million, compared to $117 million in July 1999. Newspaper advertising revenues for the month increased 8.7 percent to $60.1 million. Classified advertising revenues were up 12 percent to $27.4 million. Local advertising revenues decreased 1.6 percent to $20.6 million. Total newspaper revenues were up 6 percent to $77.8 million. July 2000 had five Sundays versus four in 1999, which had a positive effect on year-over-year growth rates. Category television revenues increased 44 percent to $23.8 million. The number of subscribers at Home & Garden Television reached 64.2 million in July, up 1.3 million from the previous month, according to the Nielsen Homevideo Index. Home & Garden Television now reaches more than 75 percent of all domestic cable households. The number of Food Network subscribers reached 50.5 million in July, up 1.4 million from the previous month, according to the Nielsen index. Broadcast television revenues increased 8.6 percent to $22.6 million. Broadcast television political advertising revenues were $1.8 million in July compared to $200,000 in July 1999. The E.W. Scripps Company (NYSE: SSP) is a diverse media concern with interests in newspaper publishing, broadcast television, cable television programming and interactive media. Scripps operates 20 daily newspapers, 10 broadcast TV stations and three cable television networks, with plans to launch a fourth. Scripps cable television network brands include Home & Garden Television, Food Network, Do it Yourself, and Fine Living, due to launch in the second half of 2001.
