SEMCO ENERGY, Inc. (NYSE: SEN) today announced the appointment of Gary J.
Valentz as Vice President and Chief Information Officer effective April 28,
2003. He also will be President of ARETECH Information Services, the
information technology subsidiary of SEMCO ENERGY, Inc., based in Marysville,
Marcus Jackson, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of SEMCO
ENERGY, Inc., made the announcement.

Valentz joins SEMCO ENERGY from MSX International of Southfield, MI, where
he was CIO and Director of Business Services.
Prior to joining MSX, he was CIO for the Natural Gas Group of Coastal
Corporation and Vice President of Information Technology for ANR Pipeline.
Valentz has 25 years experience in information technology, starting his
career as a systems analyst for NCR Corp., Dayton, Ohio, in 1978. He held
management positions for Lubrizol Corp. from 1979 through 1997, when he joined
Great Lakes Chemical Corp. as Director of Business Information Systems.
He has a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Accounting from Edinboro
University and earned a Master's in Business Administration from Case Western

combined in Michigan, as SEMCO ENERGY GAS COMPANY, and in Alaska, as ENSTAR
