PORT HURON, Mich., Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- SEMCO ENERGY GAS COMPANY's
phone lines have been busy with customers inquiring about higher heating
bills. The plain truth is, it's colder this winter than last winter, which
was the ninth warmest in the USA since record keeping began in 1895, according
to The Weather Channel.
Last winter was the warmest on record for the Northeast. Despite
increases, forecasters of energy prices do not expect costs to come close to
the winter of 2000-01, when costs rose to the highest in more than a decade.
SEMCO ENERGY GAS COMPANY reminds customers who are concerned about rising
heating bills to contact the Company for information about programs designed
to ease the strain on family budgets. Customers are asked to contact the
company well before bills mount up or gas is subject to shut off to make
payment arrangements. As always, other programs for medical emergencies and
even crisis intervention, through family independence agencies, are available.
Customers can conserve energy by installing additional attic insulation,
if affordable, closing off rooms not in use, dialing thermostats down to at
least 65 at night, and by replacing or installing caulk or weather stripping
in openings to the outside air.
