SEMCO ENERGY, Inc. (NYSE: SEN) today announced the following changes to its
Board of Directors:
John R. Hinton has been appointed to fill the vacancy created by the
retirement of Chairman of the Board William L. Johnson. Mr. Johnson will
retire effective February 28, 2002. Marcus Jackson, President and Chief
Executive Officer of SEMCO ENERGY, Inc., will become Chairman of the Board.
Thomas W. Sherman will be nominated by the Board to replace current
Director Daniel Burkhardt. Mr. Burkhardt will not stand for re-election when
his current term ends in April 2002. Mr. Sherman's nomination will be voted
on during the annual Shareholder's meeting, April 16, 2002, in Port Huron, MI.
Mr. Jackson made the announcement.

experience of John Hinton to the Board of Directors immediately and will
benefit further when Thomas Sherman joins us in April," he said. "These men
bring to the Board of Directors the type of financial expertise and business
savvy needed to develop policy as we continue to reshape the Company for an
increasingly successful future."
Mr. Hinton, of Bonita Springs, FL, retired from Kellogg Company in 1999 as
Executive Vice President of Administration and Chief Financial Officer.
He held a variety of senior-level positions with the Battle Creek-based
cereal company during more than a decade with Kellogg. His roles included
serving as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Kellogg North
America and Senior Vice President and Treasurer of Kellogg Company. He was
employed by Bendix Corporation in various accounting and treasury positions
before joining Kellogg Company in 1988.
Mr. Hinton holds a Master's degree in Business Administration from
Michigan State University. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Business
Administration at the University of Wisconsin.
Mr. Sherman, of Manchester, MA, retired in June 2000 as Executive Vice
President and Chief Financial Officer of Bay State Gas Company. He currently
serves on the Board of Directors of the utility and is a consultant for the
parent company, NiSource, Inc.
Mr. Sherman served in a variety of areas during his 34-year career with
Bay State Gas Company, including serving as Chief Financial Officer and
Director from 1975 until 2000.
He is a graduate of the University of Vermont and currently serves on the
Finance Committee for the town of Manchester, MA.
