SEMCO ENERGY, Inc. Names Arthur L. Pendleton President And Chief Operating Officer of NATCOMM, Inc.

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Feb. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SEMCO ENERGY, Inc. (NYSE: SEN) today announced the appointment of Arthur L. Pendleton as President and Chief Operating Officer of its utility construction subsidiary, NATCOMM, Inc.

Mr. Pendleton will succeed current NATCOMM President and Chief Executive Officer Robert A. Stone, who is retiring Feb. 15, 2002.

Marcus Jackson, President and Chief Executive Officer of SEMCO ENERGY, Inc., made the announcement.

"NATCOMM has been restructured to make it a better fit for the niche market it is best equipped to serve. Art Pendleton, with his extensive background in utility construction, has the skills necessary to achieve the results that will make NATCOMM a strong contributor to SEMCO ENERGY, thus increasing shareholder value," Jackson said.

"I also would like to take this opportunity to thank Bob Stone for his years of service to the Company and especially for his invaluable assistance in reshaping NATCOMM over the past few months. I wish him well in his well- deserved retirement."

Mr. Pendleton comes to NATCOMM, based in Comstock Park, MI, from Roanoke Gas Company, where he had been President and Chief Operating Officer of the Roanoke, VA, utility since June 1999.

Mr. Pendleton began his career as a Construction Supervisor with Frank S. Black Construction Co. in 1973 where he gathered valuable planning, estimating and construction experience. He moved to Roanoke Gas Company in 1978 as a Construction Engineer. His management experience there includes serving as Director of Engineering Services, Vice President of Operations and Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

He completed his Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering from VMI, Lexington, VA, in 1973. He earned a Master's Degree in Business Administration from VPI&SU in 1990. He was registered as a Professional Engineer by the State of Virginia in 1981.

Mr. Pendleton's professional memberships include ASHRAE, the Southeastern Gas Association (SEGA), and BOCA International. He is a past Board member and Secretary of the Roanoke (VA) chapter of ASHRAE, Past Chairman of the Education Steering Committee of SEGA and a member of the SEGA Board of Directors.

His civic involvement includes serving on the Boards of Directors of the Roanoke-area Better Business Bureau, Goodwill of the Valleys, Junior Achievement, including serving as Chairman; and serving as Past President of the City of Roanoke Business and Technical Council.

He and his wife, Phyllis Kay Haga Pendleton, have an adult son and daughter.
