SEMCO ENERGY, Inc. Appoints John E. Schneider Chief Financial Officer

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- SEMCO ENERGY, Inc. today announced that John E. Schneider has been appointed Chief Financial Officer of the Company effective immediately.

Schneider had been Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of SEMCO ENERGY GAS COMPANY, the Michigan division of the Company's natural gas distribution utility, since February 2001.

Marcus Jackson, President and Chief Executive Officer of SEMCO ENERGY, Inc., announced the appointment.

"John Schneider has the experience and financial expertise necessary to help direct this Company through its strategic redirection," Jackson said. "John has excelled in a number of positions within the Company and his history with SEMCO ENERGY is a tremendous advantage in his new position. I feel fortunate to be able to take advantage of his financial and operating experience."

In another top-level change, Jon A. Kosht, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company's Michigan's utility, SEMCO ENERGY GAS COMPANY, will assume Chief Operating Officer duties for utility operations in Michigan and Alaska. Tony Izzo, President of ENSTAR Natural Gas Company, the Company's Alaskan natural gas distribution division, will report directly to Kosht. Steven W. Warsinske, who has served as interim CFO, will resume his duties as the Company's Vice President of Accounting & Controller and continue the responsibilities of Treasurer.

Schneider joined SEMCO ENERGY in 1998 as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of SEMCO ENERGY VENTURES, the Company's non-regulated subsidiary. It acquires and operates businesses involved in intrastate pipelines, natural gas storage, propane and energy-related construction in various regions of the United States. He was named Senior Vice President of Corporate Development for SEMCO ENERGY, Inc. in 1999.

His background includes a number of senior management positions, including 10 years as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Primark Corporation's Financial Services companies, which offered banking and insurance services. In addition, he was a founding Officer and Director of Westmark Savings Bank.

Schneider served as Assistant Treasurer of Michigan Consolidated Gas Company and its related subsidiaries with responsibilities for banking relations and corporate finance. Prior to that he held numerous positions of increasing responsibility with the Treasurer's Department of American Natural Resources Company, a large integrated natural gas company located in Detroit. Schneider holds a Master's degree in Business Administration with a major in Finance and a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Michigan State University.
