City Cab Operates Michigan's First Natural Gas-Powered Taxi

PORT HURON, Mich., Oct. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- City Cab today announced its Ford Crown Vic taxi will be the first taxicab in Michigan powered by natural gas and the cab's inaugural run is set for October 18, 2001. The Port Huron- based Company will mark the day with a ceremonial "first fare" followed at 10:30 a.m. with a refueling demonstration at SEMCO ENERGY GAS COMPANY's refueling station on Lapeer Road to which the public is invited.

Gary Goulette, owner of the 75-year-old business, made the announcement saying, "City Cab is excited and proud to operate the first alternative fuel taxicab in the State of Michigan."

Goulette, who plans to convert his entire fleet of 10 taxicabs into natural gas vehicles, has dubbed the project "when yellow goes green." Green is a doubly accurate reference because natural gas conversions are good for the environment and cost-effective to cabdrivers, which also keeps prices down for passengers.

"At City Cab, we feel good about doing our part in working towards a cleaner environment." He added that the company tried to be forward looking when searching for a way to keep their prices affordable for customers without being dependent on wildly fluctuating fuel prices.

"When yellow goes green" is the second new project Goulette has initiated since becoming owner of City Cab four years ago. Working with another local business, Earl Smith Distributing and through the participation of over 20 area taverns, City Cab operates the "Alert Cab Program." The program offers a free ride home to those who may not be able to drive home safely and 50 to 100 people use the option each month.

Peoples City Cab, Inc., which has been in business for over 75 years, operates 10 licensed taxicabs and three(3) airport shuttle vehicles and currently serves over 15,000 passengers per month. The locally owned company operates the first natural gas-powered taxicab in Michigan and the "Alert Cab Program" through which free rides are offered to those who may be unable to safely operate their vehicles.
