PORT HURON, Mich., March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- William L. Johnson, Chairman,
President and Chief Executive Officer of SEMCO ENERGY, Inc. (NYSE: SEN), today
announced the appointment of John E. Schneider, as Executive Vice President
and Chief Operating Officer of SEMCO ENERGY's Michigan Utility. Schneider,
who became Senior Vice President of Corporate Development in September 1999,
begins his new duties March 1.
Schneider came to the Company in 1998 as Senior Vice President and Chief
Operating Officer (COO) of SEMCO ENERGY VENTURES, Inc., the diversified
businesses segment of SEMCO ENERGY, Inc. Since 1997, VENTURES has expanded
into businesses involved in engineering, construction and other related
services for underground gas pipeline, water and cable facilities in various
regions of the U.S. As COO of VENTURES, Schneider was responsible for the
operation of these companies, as well as SEMCO ENERGY's investment in
non-regulated gas pipeline and storage facilities.
Schneider will report to Jon A. Kosht, President and Chief Executive
Officer of SEMCO ENERGY GAS COMPANY. "The Michigan Utility has earned a great
reputation, through 50 years of safely delivering clean, low-cost energy and
preserving a standard of excellence in customer service and community
involvement. I'm pleased to have John's extensive financial and operational
expertise on the senior management team as we continue to profitably grow the

Before coming to SEMCO ENERGY, Schneider's experience included 10 years as
President and CEO of Primark Corporation's financial services companies. He
also held leadership positions for Michigan Consolidated Gas Company and
American Natural Resources Company (now ANR Pipeline).
Schneider holds a Masters degree in Business Administration with a major
in Finance and a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Mathematics from
Michigan State University.
