SEMCO ENERGY GAS COMPANY Advises Caution With Snow Removal

PORT HURON, Mich., Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- SEMCO ENERGY GAS COMPANY today reminds customers and contractors to avoid piling heavy snow onto gas meters and pipes when clearing downfalls.

The added weight of snow shoveled or blown onto meters and pipes can cause stress which can possibly lead to leaks. Also, in an emergency, quick access to a shutoff valve could be hampered by built-up snow and ice.

Customers with new, high efficiency gas furnaces and direct-vent water heaters also are reminded that these appliances are vented through the side of the house, not through the chimney. These vents and surrounding areas also should be kept free of snow and debris.

SEMCO ENERGY GAS COMPANY distributes natural gas to more than 350,000 customers in Michigan and Alaska. It also owns and operates business involved in natural gas engineering and quality assurance services, pipeline construction services, propane distribution, intrastate pipelines and natural gas storage in various regions of the United States. In addition, it provides information technology and outsourcing services, specializing in the mid-range computer market.
