GRO1000 Initiative Helps Expand Urban Farming in Tallahassee Community

Enhancing Our Cities

For the Frenchtown community in Tallahassee, the Scotts Miracle-Gro initiative GRO1000 now means the expansion of an area youth farm into an urban farming educational hub. On April 12 with the help of The U.S. Conference of Mayors' and the City of Tallahassee, ScottsMiracle-Gro presented a check that will fund the expansion of the iGrow Whatever You Like Youth Farm Initiative.

The event drew 50 area youth working with local volunteers and representatives of local and national partner organizations such the award-winning Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Columbus, Ohio, and the National Gardening Association. The expansion will include an outdoor kitchen, bio-digester, produce wash station, farmer's market stand, aquaponics and composting system. Funds will also be used to build an educational pavilion, which will host community gatherings and workshops, and create a giving garden that will grow produce for area residents in need.

GRO1000 is a partnership committed to bringing more than 1,000 gardens and green spaces to communities in the United States and select international sites by 2018. ScottsMiracle-Gro launched GRO1000 with its philanthropic partners as a way to bring local groups and people together around a common 'green' project with the power to beautify, educate and give back to the local community.

The expansion project in Tallahassee marks the 17th GRO1000 garden in the State of Florida. The last green space installation will be completed in 2018, which coincides with the 150th anniversary of ScottsMiracle-Gro.
