|Three Brunswick Centers To Host Special Olympics Minnesota State Tournament|
Lake Forest, Ill. (Nov. 5, 2010)—Almost 2,000 Special Olympics bowlers are heading for three Minneapolis metro Brunswick Zone XL centers to compete in the state bowling tournament Nov. 12-14. Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, the 2010 Special Olympics State Bowling Tournament is the culmination of weeks of local and regional contests held throughout Minnesota.
Hosting the Special Olympics athletes are Brunswick Zone XL Brooklyn Park, 7545 Brooklyn Blvd, Brooklyn Park; Brunswick Zone XL Blaine, 11351 Ulysses St. NE, Blaine; and Brunswick Zone XL Lakeville, 11129 162nd St. West, Lakeville. The tournament kicks off at Brooklyn Park on Friday, Nov. 12, and continues at all three centers on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 13-14.
In this final weekend of the statewide competition, bowlers, grouped by age and ability level, will compete in singles, doubles, team and unified doubles bowling. The unified doubles pairs athletes with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. The contests at the Brunswick centers are free and open to the public. For a schedule of events, call the individual center--763-561-2230 (Blaine), 763-503-2695 (Brooklyn Park), and 952-435-2695 (Lakeville).
Bowling is the largest Special Olympics sport in Minnesota, and one of the fastest growing. Although some modifications are made for athletes with physical disabilities, most Special Olympics bowlers compete using the same rules as those on the professional tour. Athletes start training early in the year with local teams and then advance through several levels of competition to reach the state tournament.
