Ysleta Independent School District Selects PLATO Learning for Acceleration, Remediation, and Credit Recovery

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 14, 2006--PLATO Learning, Inc. (NASDAQ:TUTR), a leading provider of K-adult computer-based and e-learning solutions, today announced they were awarded a $748,000 agreement with Ysleta Independent School District (Tex.) for acceleration, remediation, and credit recovery (ARC Program) in response to a district request for proposals.

"Our goal for the ARC program is to create consistency across the district in our acceleration, remediation, and credit recovery programs and to position ourselves to meet the needs of students who don't fit into the traditional class setting, whether through alternative programs or distance learning," said Micha Villarreal, director of instructional technology, Ysleta Independent School District.

Proposals were evaluated on a provider's ability to meet the needs of middle and high school populations, as well as their rating against the following criteria:

    1. Purchase price;

    2. Reputation of the vendor and of the vendor's goods or services;

    3. Quality of the vendor's goods or services;

4. Extent to which the goods or services meet the district's needs; and

5. Vendor's past relationship with the district.

"We had high standards when selecting a vendor. We wanted to ensure that we were providing good quality content that met state standards and provided the rigor of face-to-face courses," said Villarreal. "PLATO Learning's curriculum best met the specifications set forth in the request for proposal. The PLATO online curriculum provided the curricular foundation for the ARC project. The product was then personalized to meet our range of needs, from credit recovery to acceleration, and will support our future vision for distance learning."

PLATO Learning will provide software and professional services to 11 high school, middle school, and alternative learning institutions in Ysleta ISD for three years. Middle and high school curricula in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies will be complemented with 19 days of professional development to guide successful implementation, help the district differentiate instruction to meet unique learner needs, and support program evaluation.

"PLATO Learning is honored to have been chosen for the ARC Program and commends the district's commitment to provide students with alternatives that improve their academic achievement," said Mike Morache, PLATO Learning President and CEO. "We have a long history of partnering with school districts to successfully reduce dropout rates and increase student credit attainment. We look forward to expanding on that success for the students and staff of Ysleta ISD."
