Program Offers a Chance for Employees to Give Back To Their Communities
TAMPA, FL – June 24, 2013 – On Friday, June 21, Liberty’s Tampa office rolled up their sleeves to participate in the 10th annual Bill Rouse Day of Caring, a national service program in memory of the company’s founder, Willard G. Rouse III. The 14 member team spent the day volunteering at Feeding America Tampa Bay sorting perishable and non-perishable food donations, checking quality and expiration dates, and prepping food items for orders. Liberty sorted enough food in one day to equal 8,000 meals.
“It is extremely rewarding for our company to be able to give back and to partner with local organizations such as Feeding America Tampa Bay, and to show our appreciation for all the great work that the organization is doing in our community,” said Jody Johnston, vice president and city manager for Liberty’s Tampa operation. “We look forward to this day every year, and this ten year mark is especially meaningful as we reflect on the numerous organizations that have been a part of Bill’s legacy.”
In addition to volunteering on Friday June 21st at Feeding America Tampa Bay, Liberty, in partnership with their generous local tenants, held a food drive at several of its Tampa properties resulting in approximately 300 pounds of non-perishable food items that it donated to the organization.
Feeding America is the largest domestic hunger relief organization in the country, consisting of a network of more than 200 food banks. Working together with its fellow food banks, the organization has the ability to leverage food donor relationships and effectively transport food to feed hungry Americans. Across the country one in six people struggles with hunger. Of the 50 million people who are unsure where their next meal will come from, Feeding America Tampa Bay provides food to over 600 local charities which support 700,000 people in West Central Florida.
Liberty’s 10th Anniversary of Bill Rouse Day of Caring Program
For the last decade, more than 400 Liberty Property Trust employees from across the country and in the United Kingdom have traded in their suits and iPhones for t-shirts, screwdrivers, shovels and paintbrushes to participate in the annual program. Rouse was as committed to community service and involvement as he was to real estate development. When he passed away in 2003, Liberty employees sought a way to honor his memory and launched the annual Bill Rouse Day of Caring. It is traditionally held each year on the Friday closest to his birthday (June 19.)
To date, the company has dedicated more than 20,000 people-hours to projects as diverse as repairing homes for the elderly to collecting food for local food banks to wetland restoration to serving meals for the homeless– and hundreds more.
