The Legacy Of Founder Bill Rouse Lives On Through Day Of Caring Program

PHILADELPHIA, PA – June 22, 2010 – On Friday, June 18, more than 400 Liberty Property Trust employees from across the country and in the United Kingdom traded in their suits and Blackberrys for t-shirts, screwdrivers and paintbrushes to participate in the 7th annual Bill Rouse Day of Caring. Liberty closed its 20+ offices for a full day so that teams of employees could work on community service projects in memory of the company’s founder, Willard G. Rouse III.

Bill Rouse was as committed to community service and involvement as he was to real estate development. When he passed away in 2003, Liberty employees sought a way to honor his memory and launched the annual Bill Rouse Day of Caring. It is traditionally held on the Friday before his birthday, each year.

To honor his memory the combined staff of the Liberty Property Trust offices in Malvern (PA), Horsham (PA), Philadelphia (PA) and Marlton (NJ) partnered to work at Environment Community Opportunity (ECO) Charter School in Camden, New Jersey. The team of 200 Liberty employees spent the day carpeting, painting, creating an outside classroom and recreation area, landscaping, making repairs, doing electrical work, building shelving and storage areas and establishing libraries at both of the school sites.

Founded by Dr. Antoinette C. Dendtler, the Environment Community Opportunity Charter School opened its doors in September 2005 to 150 Camden, NJ students. It currently serves 230 students in grades K through 5. The mission of the ECO Charter School is to empower students to realize their vast intellectual and social potential by teaching them to think critically and creatively and by guiding them to unite mastered skills and content knowledge to create and pursue their own opportunities. ECO Charter School’s students are the children of Camden – they will grow to become adept learners, community leaders and environmental stewards. School leaders seek to sustain and preserve a rich learning community where ideas and inquiry are valued and rewarded. The school is committed to providing safe surroundings, meaningful education and leadership experiences as well as opportunities for the students to realize their full potential. ECO’s academic program incorporates a standards-driven program with the Using the Environment as an Integrating Context for Improving Students Learning (EIC) Framework. For more information, visit
