LIBERTY PROPERTY TRUST’S HOUSTON REGION TO WORK FOR
DEVEREUX TEXAS TREATMENT CENTER ON BILL ROUSE DAY OF CARING, JUNE 19
Day of Service includes 20 Offices and 400 Employees in the US and UK
MALVERN, PA – June 18, 2009 - On Friday, June 19, more than 400 Liberty Property Trust employees from across the country and in the United Kingdom will trade in their suits and Blackberrys for t-shirts, screwdrivers and paintbrushes to participate in the 6th annual Bill Rouse Day of Caring. Liberty will close its 20 offices for a full day so that teams of employees can work on community service projects in memory of the company’s founder, Willard G. Rouse III.
Rouse was as committed to community service and involvement as he was to real estate development. When he passed away in 2003, Liberty employees sought a way to honor his memory and launched the annual Bill Rouse Day of Caring. It is traditionally held on the Friday closest to his birthday, June 19, each year. This year it will be celebrated on his actual birthday.
To date, the company has dedicated more than 14,000 people hours to projects as diverse as repairing homes for the elderly to collecting food for local food banks to hosting a fair for foster children (to encourage adoption) to upgrading a recreation center – and dozens more.
Liberty’s Houston Office to Work for the Devereux Texas Treatment Center
The Devereux Texas Treatment Network is a part of a nationwide network of programs treating individuals of all ages who have a wide range of emotional, behavioral, developmental, psychiatric and chemical dependency disorders. The center offers services to children suffering from abuse and serious emotional disturbances, and to adults with severe mental health and developmental disabilities. This year, Liberty Property Trust’s Houston office will join together to work for the Devereux Treatment Center in League City. The seven member Liberty team will be working with the program’s youth to plant a vegetable garden, teaching about the value of proper nutrition through interactive educational games, preparing lunch and participating in various team-building activities.
“We are very pleased to be able to donate our time and ‘give back’ to such an incredible organization that provides such valuable services for youth in need enrolled in the Devereux facility in League City,” said Joe Trinkle, vice president and city manager, Liberty Property Trust. “Each year this day reminds us of all the great work that goes on in our community and offers us a way to contribute and honor Bill’s memory.”
Rouse’s Inspiration
Rouse’s commitment to giving can be traced back to early in his career when he relied on the aid and advice from a friend and colleague named Jim Cohen.
One day Bill asked him, “Jim – you just give, and give, and give. How do you do it?”
“Bill,” Mr. Cohen said, “The more I give, the harder it is to catch up with what has been given to me.”
When Bill told this story at employee gatherings, one could hear a pin drop. The Bill Rouse Day of Caring is proof that his message was well received.
