DALLAS , June 4, 2008- Voyager Expanded Learning ® announced today that students logged into its new reading technology platform, Ticket to Read, ™ surpassed the three million passage mark. Students enrolled in the new edition of Voyager's K-5 reading intervention program, Voyager Passport, ™ as well as the company's K-3 core reading program, Voyager Universal Literacy System, ® began using Ticket to Read in early October 2007.
Students hit the first million passage mark on February 26, 2008 and followed up the second million just seven weeks later on April 15, 2008. At any given time, more than 1,000 students are typically logged into the program and a nearly a quarter of the student usage takes place during after-school hours.
“Teachers are really impressed that not only is there a fluency component, but there is also vocabulary and comprehension,” says Dian Prestwich, reading coach at Dupont Elementary School in Commerce City , Colorado . “In addition, the fluency practice isn't just about reading quickly, but T.J. Ticket encourages the kids to read in phrases and with expression. You all did an excellent job with Ticket to Read!”
Here's what several second-grade students had to say about Ticket to Read in recent letters to T.J. Ticket:
• I love www.tickettoread.com because it makes me want to read more and more. I love to read the passages and I like to take the tests on the passages.
• I like www.tickettoread.com because it will make me read better and it will get my speed up. I like to read--it is fun!
• Ticket to Read is the best thing I ever went on! The best thing about it is when you get to the games. You read with the reader and you get to read by yourself. When you are done reading, you can look at pictures to see what they mean.
Ticket to Read, is an easy-to-access and easy-to-use website ( www.tickettoread.com ) designed to increase reading fluency, comprehension and vocabulary through a reward system that promotes reading practice at home and school for all students including struggling and on track readers. Students read high-interest passages at increasing levels of difficulty and take passage quizzes to demonstrate they understood what they read while earning tickets to use in customizing their personal clubhouse. Students can independently practice important reading skills at school, home, library or anywhere there is Internet access.
