Social and Environmental Policy

UNITED NATURAL FOODS, INC.

SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

It is the Policy of United Natural Foods Inc., (“UNFI” or “the Company”), to go beyond traditional business responsibilities to actively support environmental and social causes.

Environmental Responsibility…

United Natural Foods, Inc. is committed to incorporating environmentally sustainable practices into present and future business activities. We believe we have a responsibility to our environment to reduce our ecological footprint while maintaining our pledge to exceed the needs and expectations of our stakeholders.

Our vision includes:

  • Assigning corporate leadership to research and implement sustainable programs
  • Engaging our stakeholders in our stewardship efforts through education and communication
  • Adopting “green” business practices nationwide throughout the company
  • Reducing the negative output of construction emissions by complying with the United States Green Building Council requirements on future building efforts
  • Minimizing consumption of non-renewable resources used in our facilities

In order to achieve these visions, United Natural Foods Inc. will endeavor to:

  • Continually strive to educate ourselves on “green” initiatives through conferences, media publications and networking
  • Bring awareness and enthusiasm to our employees, customers, vendors and shareholders through publications, press releases, and sustainability reports
  • Implement energy and water conservation programs throughout all of our existing facilities; source alternative forms of fuel for transportation
  • Design and build environmentally sustainable distribution centers under the guidance of the LEED Building Certification process
  • Develop national waste reduction and recycling programs for all facilities, with the goal of moving toward zero waste

United Natural Foods, Inc. will regularly monitor its efforts to enhance support of sustainable initiatives that protect the environment and foster stewardship of the land.

Social Responsibility …

Our sense of social responsibility begins with our employee/associates. We will continue to provide an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (“ESOP”). This plan currently owns over six percent of Company stock.

We are committed to a comprehensive benefits program and a progressive work environment. UNFI recognizes and encourages the responsibilities of family and individual lifestyles in conjunction with the work experience. We hire and promote based on ability to get the job done and work as part of the team; ethnicity, gender and age do not bear on these decisions.

As a Natural Products Industry participant, UNFI supports national and local charitable organizations that distribute food, meals and products which improve the lives of people in the communities where we live. All UNFI facilities have close ties to local food banks to which we provide frequent shipments. On average, we donate more than $5 million in natural food products per year.

We also support communities who have sustained disasters and provide food, bottled water and supplies to servicing organizations.
