Four-Year Contract Covers Eligible Medicare Advantage and Medicare
Supplement Members
NASHVILLE, Tenn. & LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep. 17, 2012--
As part of its dream to help people achieve lifelong well-being, Humana
Inc. (NYSE: HUM), one of the nation’s leading health and well-being
companies, is extending its contract offering Healthways (NASDAQ: HWAY)
award-winning SilverSneakers®
Fitness Program to eligible members through 2016.
SilverSneakers, the nation’s leading exercise and social support program
designed to keep seniors healthy, has been offered to Humana Medicare
Advantage and Medicare Supplement members since 2004. Currently, more
than 2.1 million Humana members are eligible to participate in
SilverSneakers.
Using proven methodologies based upon more than 16 years of science and
outcomes, the SilverSneakers Fitness Program increases physical activity
in older adults, often resulting in higher well-being and lower health
care costs. The program engages participants in active behavior change
through access to a variety of physical activity venues and
senior-specific programming that incorporates physical fitness and
social experiences.
“Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program has proven to be an
outstanding health, wellness and social benefit for Humana’s Medicare
members across the country,” said Thomas J. Liston, President, Retail
Segment for Humana. “We were pleased to first provide this
senior-focused fitness program to our members some eight years ago, and
we’re equally pleased now to extend our agreement with Healthways
another four years.”
The enduring success of the program is evidenced through Humana members’
responses to the SilverSneakers Fitness Program 2011 Annual Member
Survey. The national survey found that Humana SilverSneakers members
self-report better physical, emotional and overall health, as well as a
lower disease burden and a reduced incidence of chronic conditions, than
the national averages for older adults in the US, as reported by the
Medicare Health Outcomes Survey.
Humana SilverSneakers participants also reported reductions in pain
experienced due to arthritis, lower back problems and sciatica, while 87
percent of new enrollees indicated that they exercised more than twice
as often in 2011 as they had prior to joining the fitness program.
“Humana has established their commitment to help people achieve lifelong
well-being through the offering of comprehensive programs designed to
promote all aspects of positive well-being for all age groups,” said Ben
R. Leedle, Jr., Healthways President and Chief Executive Officer. “By
continuing to offer SilverSneakers to its Medicare Advantage and
Medicare Supplement enrollees through 2016, Humana is demonstrating its
long-term, ongoing dedication to its older adult members through a
time-tested, proven solution that provides a unique combination of
exercise and social support. This important extension not only reflects
Humana’s steadfastness to the health and well-being of their older adult
population, but is also a testament to a great working partnership
between Humana and Healthways.”
The SilverSneakers Fitness Program was founded in 1993 and is available
to more than 9 million Medicare beneficiaries through many Medicare
Advantage plans, Medicare Supplement carriers and group retiree plans.
The Healthways fitness center network offers convenient access to more
than 15,000 participating fitness and wellness facilities nationwide.
