General Dynamics' commitment to diversity encourages inclusion of all people and fosters a work environment in which employees can perform their jobs and pursue their careers free from discrimination and harassment. General Dynamics is dedicated to the principles of equal employment and advancement of people based on their individual qualifications, skills and abilities. This commitment is supported by policies and procedures that foster a non-discriminatory workplace. Diversity is a priority within General Dynamics. Last year, General Dynamics supported a number of events intended to increase diversity in the science and technology fields, including American Indian Science and Engineering Society, National Society of Black Engineers, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Society of Women Engineers, Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Corporation, Black Engineer of the Year Awards and Women of Color in Engineering and Science. Our business units are proud to partner together and support these initiatives. Bath Iron Works initiated a project that included building relationships with organizations, schools and the general public. This effort not only included doing a better job of reaching out to and meeting with diverse groups, but inviting them to Bath Iron Works to see our culture, meet our workers and explore available opportunities. Several General Dynamics employees were selected for the National Women of Color in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Career & Awards Fair (NWOC). Advanced Information Systems, Electric Boat, Gulfstream and Land Systems employees were recognized as NWOC Technology All-Stars and Rising Stars in 2008. For more than 12 years, the National Women of Color Technology Awards has been the conference of choice to recognize the significant accomplishments of minority women in the digital world and to attract and leverage talent in innovative, professional and technical positions.
General Dynamics also supported the annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) event in 2008. The BEYA Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Global Competitiveness Conference attracts the top professionals and students from every part of the nation and every field of science, engineering and technology. As part of the BEYA event, 25 General Dynamics employees from Advanced Information Systems, C4 Systems, Electric Boat, Gulfstream and Land Systems were nominated and selected for national recognition. Advanced Information Systems, Bath Iron Works, C4 Systems, Gulfstream, Land Systems and NASSCO joined to participate in the 2008 Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Conference. The SHPE is the largest Hispanic technical conference in the nation involved in the recruitment and development of reliable, highly qualified, diverse technical talent. The conference provides educational enrichment and academic outreach to students of all ages, extended training and networking for professionals and corporate representatives, and forums for companies to market their products, services and new technologies. General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems and General Dynamics Information Technology support our veteran community in a number of ways. Both business units actively support the Transition Assistance Program, designed by the Department of Defense to smooth the transition of military personnel, as well as the Hire a Hero program, a non-profit initiative founded by the Armed Forces Support Foundation, specifically organized for injured service members and their primary caregivers to help them find meaningful employment. General Dynamics headquarters continues its efforts by supporting diverse organizations that improve lives across socio-economic lines such as EVERYBODY WINS! and the Greater Washington Urban League. The mission of the Urban League is "to increase the economic and political empowerment of African Americans and other minorities and to help all Americans share equally in the responsibilities and rewards of full citizenship." To accomplish its mission, the League uses the tools and methods of social work, economics, law and other disciplines to bring about equal opportunities and equal access to African Americans and minorities in the Washington metropolitan area. EVERYBODY WINS! is a national literacy and mentoring nonprofit proven to build the skills and love of reading among low-income elementary students. By bringing volunteer mentors into schools for weekly one-on-one reading experiences, everybody wins – children, schools, volunteers, their companies and ultimately, society. | ||||||||
