LAS VEGAS, March 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- American Pacific Corporation
(Nasdaq: APFC) is pleased to announce that its wholly-owned subsidiary AMPAC
Fine Chemicals LLC (AFC) received the California Pollution Prevention
Challenge Award from the Department of Toxic Substances Control of California
(DTSC) and the Chemical Industry Council of California (CICC). The award
recognizes the overall pollution prevention achievements of AFC's STRIDE
(Sustainability Through Renewable Innovative Design and Engineering) team and
the implementation of an ethyl acetate recycling project.
Dr. Aslam Malik, President of AFC, said, "We are excited to receive this
award for the second time in two years. This shows our dedication and
commitment to implementing the principles of green chemistry and engineering."
The DTSC/CICC Pollution Prevention Challenge and Recognition project
challenges chemical facilities in California to reduce the generation of
waste, and promotes the Triple Bottom Line:
- Good for the environment
- Good for workers, their families, and surrounding communities
- Good for business profitability and competitiveness
The project creates a partnership where trust is built between regulators
and the regulated community.
Jill Reed, AFC Environmental Manager, said, "The STRIDE team was formed to
look at all potential means to improve our processes. The team is composed of
members of every function at AFC. Since its inception in 2007, the STRIDE
team projects have reduced hazardous waste generation by approximately 2.2
million pounds and in 2008 the hazardous waste reduction reached close to 2.8
million pounds."
"This is only possible because of the close collaboration between the
industry and the agencies such as DTSC," said Martha Murray, AFC's
Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Director. "This constant dialogue and
interaction, results in practical regulations that are based on scientific
judgment. This overall favors the 'Triple Bottom Line.'"
Dr. Malik adds, "Through the use of technology to make our processes more
efficient, and by constantly trying to improve our existing processes, we help
to maintain jobs here in California, and achieve better protection of the
environment."
