|AppliedMicro PacketPro™ APM8669x Processors Enable Domain Protection for Industry’s Most Advanced System Partitioning|
Virtualization capabilities of advanced SoC architecture ensure continuous operations for embedded applications by averting on-chip conflicts for shared system resources
With industry-leading throughput for multifunction printers, enterprise control plane, consumer NAS systems, wireless access points and industrial applications, the APM8669x family features dual 1.4GHz PowerPC® 465 cores, high-speed I/O, advanced offload acceleration engines, intelligent packet processing and AppliedMicro’s versatile ARM®–based SLIMpro™ subsystem.
The unique features of the APM8669x family enable AppliedMicro’s domain protection to run two or more subsystems simultaneously and independently without performance degradation, bandwidth contention, or security compromises. By enforcing a hardware-based virtual partition among subsystems, domain protection addresses a critical problem for embedded applications by preventing one operating system from monopolizing all the bandwidth to a resource thereby causing another operating system to starve.
“Domain protection is a critical capability as more systems trend
towards a virtualized environment where multiple applications running
simultaneously require their own dedicated processing resources,” said
“Our recent survey of embedded engineers shows that among the most
frequently cited advantages of the use of virtualization are the secure
partitioning of guest operating systems and the ability to run and
manage multiple operating systems,” said
In addition to domain protection, the APM8669x family features the PacketPro2 SoC architecture to provide advanced hardware offloads, traffic classification, policing and rate shaping, inline and look-aside security, and a cryptographic boundary. These features support the delivery of the industry’s most advanced capabilities in security, energy-efficiency, system throughput, and reliability.
Both the single-core APM86691 and dual-core APM86692 SoCs feature the PowerPC 465 with floating point unit manufactured in a 40-nm TSMC® process. It also features 32KB L1 Cache, 256KB L2 Cache per core, 32KB On-Chip SRAM, 64-bit DDR3 memory controller with optional ECC, four 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports, 2 RGMII or 4 SGMII, three USB ports with integrated PHY (2 Host and 1 OTG) lanes, two USB 2.0 hosts with integrated PHYs, HDLC controller, and two SATA 2.0 ports.
Embedded system developers are invited to see how the advanced domain
protection capabilities of the Black Mamba APM8669x family provide
enhanced system reliability, lower BOM costs and accelerated
