ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 27, 2004--Cox Communications (NYSE:
COX) announced today that customers in more than 95 percent of its
markets will have access to digital video recorder (DVR) service by
the end of 2004. Upcoming market launches include Orange County,
Calif.; Omaha, Neb; Roanoke and Hampton Roads, Va.; New England; New
Orleans and Baton Rouge, La.; Macon, Ga.; Tulsa, Okla. and Middle
America Cox. DVR service in these markets will be delivered via the
Motorola DCT-6412 set-top box.
"Our earlier market launches proved that DVR service greatly
enhances our customer's viewing experience," said David Pugliese, Vice
President of Product Marketing and Management. "With a DVR solution
now available on the Motorola set-top box, we feel it is critical to
make this exciting new service available to our customers as quickly
as possible to further reinforce the value of Cox Digital Cable
service."
Using Scientific-Atlanta technology, Cox first launched DVR
service in its Gainesville, Fla. and Northern Virginia markets in
early 2003. Early Cox research showed that 93 percent of Cox DVR
customers have recommended or plan to recommend the product to a
friend. Research also shows that the service strongly increases a
customer's overall satisfaction with Cox. When Cox launched DVR
service in Kansas earlier this month, its first DVR market using
Motorola technology, it had more than 2,000 preorders for the service.
"In every market previously launched, customers have been lined up
on a waiting list for this product," said Lisa Pickelsimer, Director
of Video Product Development. "Word is out that DVR can change the way
people watch television, making it more convenient and more personal.
We felt it was important to get this product to market as quickly as
we could in order to put this cutting edge technology to work for our
customers."
Cox provides DVR service through both Motorola and
Scientific-Atlanta platforms. Customers are not required to make
expensive up front equipment purchases as is often required from other
DVR providers. Customers can receive digital cable, DVR and
high-definition television all through one box. DVR service is offered
as an extension to Cox Digital Cable service.
"These upcoming launches solidify Cox's commitment to bringing our
customers the most innovative technology available to enhance their
digital experience," added Pugliese. "Cox customers realize that they
don't have to look very far to fill all of their entertainment and
communications needs. We can offer the most basic of services as well
as the most advanced, all from one company, all on one bill."
