CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May. 4, 2012--
Fifth Third Bancorp today announced that its 22,000 employees celebrated
Fifth Third Day by providing more than 340,000 meals to fight hunger
throughout its footprint. The Company had originally set a goal of
raising funds and donating foodstuffs equivalent to 53,000 meals.
Fifth Third Day is celebrated annually on May 3, 5/3 on the calendar.
For more than 20 years, the Bank has used its holiday to recognize the
contribution of its employees, thank its valued customers and support
communities where it operates. This year marked the first that all 15 of
the Company’s affiliates joined together to support the same cause.
“Fifth Third Day was a perfect opportunity for our Company to reach out
into our local communities and make a difference,” said Kevin T. Kabat,
president and CEO of Fifth Third Bancorp. “Because we understand the
impact living with hunger can have on individuals and the community, we
dedicated our 2012 celebrations to fighting hunger across our footprint.”
Each of Fifth Third’s 15 affiliates identified needs in their local
communities and designed their holiday celebrations. For example,
employees in Central Indiana packed meals for Kids Against Hunger, an
organization that feeds malnourished and hungry children. Fifth Third
Bank (Central Ohio) hosted a “Growing Together: Make a Meal” campaign to
provide local families with fresh produce grown in a community garden.
In conjunction with the Kane County Cougars, employees in Chicago
launched a “Strike Out Hunger” campaign that encouraged fans to purchase
discounted game tickets and bring non-perishable food items to the
ballpark. Many affiliates, including Fifth Third Bank (Georgia) and
Fifth Third Bank (Cincinnati) sold “Shields of Recognition” to recognize
employee accomplishments as well as make a donation to local food
pantries. Fifth Third Bank (Tampa Bay) hosted its annual Fifth Third
Feeding Families food drive.
