READER'S DIGEST FOUNDATION
The Reader's Digest Foundation (RDF) is a charitable institution funded by contributions from Reader's Digest Association. Just as Reader's Digest takes pride in products that enrich the lives of people worldwide, Reader's Digest Foundation is enriching lives as well.
Our Mission
The Reader's Digest Foundation is dedicated to creating opportunities and promoting efforts that encourage individuals to make a positive difference in their communities, and to supporting programs designed to help young people learn, grow and enrich their lives.
To address this mission, RDF:
- Provides a grant to The Boys & Girls Clubs of America for its National Youth of the Year Program
- Partners with local nonprofit organizations to create workplace opportunities for RDA employees to volunteer their time and share their expertise
- Encourages RDA employees to contribute to their own communities through volunteerism and individual philanthropy
Our Current Programs
- RD Cares Employee Volunteer Program – Workplace initiatives and volunteer resources for RDA employees
- Employee Grants Programs – Matching Gifts and Volunteer Grants to help RDA employees “give back” in their own communities
- National Partnership – Boys & Girls Clubs of America
RD Cares engages our employees in volunteerism and helps them to enrich the communities where they live and work. It includes both workplace volunteer initiatives as well as intranet resources where employees can find or post volunteer opportunities outside of work.
Workplace Volunteer Initiatives
The RD Cares initiatives create opportunities where employees can volunteer their time and share their expertise. The RD Cares Committee, a group of dedicated employees, help plan and implement several workplace initiatives each year and encourage their fellow employees throughout the company to join in. Our major workplace volunteer initiatives include:
Back to School Clothes for Kids
Employees purchase new school outfits, winter coats and sneakers for children from nearby family homeless shelters and host a party for them where they where they receive their new clothes and celebrate the new school year.
Holiday Helping Hands
During the winter holiday season, employees provide gifts and meals for children and their families from underserved communities, supporting a variety of nonprofit organizations at RDA sites throughout the country.
RD Day of Caring
Each spring, employees participate in the RD Day of Caring by volunteering at local nonprofit organizations. From getting a summer camp ready for inner-city children to helping a local Hunger Task Force sort food to feed the hungry, to cleaning and cooking for families of seriously ill children hospitalized far from home, employees team up with their family members and friends to give back to their communities.
Volunteer Recognition Ceremony
The spirit of giving is celebrated each year at a reception honoring employees who reached out over the past year to help those less fortunate through participation in RD Cares initiatives at work and through volunteer efforts in their own communities.
Resources to Find and Post Volunteer Opportunities Outside of Work
To follow our mission of supporting and encouraging employee volunteerism, RD Cares also provides a special section on our intranet devoted to providing information on volunteer opportunities. Employees can search the site to find opportunities to participate in near home and also post opportunities important to them that they'd like their colleagues to know about.
Employee Grants Programs
Our generous grant programs support our mission of encouraging our employees' efforts to volunteer in their own communities and contribute to the charities important to them.
Our Matching Gift Program maximizes employees' charitable donations by matching personal contributions of $25 or more to charities of their choice, up to a total employee match of $25,000 a year.
Our Volunteer Incentive Program (VIP) provides grants made on behalf of employees to charities where they volunteer outside of work. Two types of grants are available, one for on-going volunteering and the other for volunteering at a one-time project. Our employees are eligible for one of each type per year.
National Partnership
Addressing our mission of providing underserved youth with opportunities and experiences that enrich their lives, we proudly support the Boys & Girls Clubs of America as the key supporter of its National Youth of the Year Program.
The National Youth of the Year Program, BGCA's premier program, is the product of a partnership between BGCA and the RD Foundation spanning more than 6 decades. It has brought hope and opportunity to extraordinary teens who have overcome considerable odds to become leaders and role models. The Foundation's generous support as YOY's founding sponsor and key supporter has made the program possible from coast to coast, year after year, since its inception in 1947.
Beginning with competitions in local Clubs across the country, followed by state and regional competitions, and culminating in a national competition each fall, YOY recognizes teens for their leadership skills, academic achievement and outstanding service the their Club and community. Our employees participate at all levels, presenting awards and RD Foundation college scholarships to winners at 50 state events, five regional competitions and at the national ceremony at a Congressional Breakfast in Washington DC .
