MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 9, 2006--Today, Capital One
Financial Corporation (NYSE:COF) and Junior Achievement Worldwide(TM)
(JA) were recognized by the Business and Civic Leadership Center of
the U.S. Chamber of Commerce with the award of its inaugural Corporate
Citizenship Partnership Award for their work to provide financial
literacy training to students across the United States. More than
12,000 online voters visited BCLC's web site in August and September
to select the winner of the Partnership Award.
"Business-nonprofit partnerships are emerging as a powerful force
for good," said BCLC Executive Director Stephen Jordan. "We
congratulate Capital One and Junior Achievement for being the first to
win BCLC's Partnership Award."
"Capital One is extremely proud of this award and of our
partnership with JA in developing innovative programs to teach the
basics of money management to kids in communities across the country,"
said Richard D. Fairbank, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of
Capital One. "We are very grateful to the Chamber and the community
for this recognition of our partnership."
"We are absolutely thrilled and honored to receive the inaugural
Partnership Award along with our great friends at Capital One," said
David S. Chernow, President and Chief Executive Officer of JA
Worldwide. "Through partnerships such as this one, we are able to
truly change students' lives and raise awareness of the critical issue
of financial literacy among our youth."
Capital One and Junior Achievement developed three programs to
teach middle school students about the fundamental concepts of
financial literacy and work-related life skills/career development.
Capital One/Junior Achievement Finance Park:
This innovative mobile program is designed to introduce middle
school students to money management basics through interactive
learning. The program includes a comprehensive classroom curriculum
and participation in a day-long simulation at a mobile unit which
transforms into a miniature city where students learn how classroom
lessons apply to the choices they will make as adults.
JA in a Day:
Hundreds of Capital One associates delivered age appropriate
financial literacy simultaneously to multiple classrooms in Richmond,
Va. and Washington, D.C. In addition, Capital One associates provided
each student with a book to enjoy for summer reading, new book shelves
for each of the classrooms, upgraded existing computers with memory
modules, and donated cell phones to the teachers to have in the
classrooms for emergencies.
Sliding into Succe$$:
In partnership with the Washington Nationals, students developed
their own fantasy baseball teams by calculating batting averages using
individual player statistics. Students then selected players by
evaluating various trade options while staying within a specified
budget. Washington Nationals All-Star relief pitcher Chad Cordero
visited with students during the program.
