FALLS CHURCH, Va., Feb 4, 2002 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- For the fourth year
in a row, Capital One Financial Corporation (NYSE: COF) ranked in Fortune's
listing of the "100 Best Companies to Work for in America." Capital One ranks 32
and is the top Virginia-based company. Capital One is also recognized as one of
the top 25 Best Places to Work for Women, according to the listing.
"We created Capital One with the vision of being a great place to work -- a
place that challenges people to develop and use their talents, and that rewards
them for continually raising the bar," said Nigel Morris, President and Chief
Operating Officer. "What is most gratifying is that our ranking is driven by the
views of our own associates."
Fortune collaborated with best-selling authors Robert Levering and Milton
Moskowitz to compile the list. Levering and Moskowitz, who have been tracking
the best companies since 1981, culled 279 companies as the most viable
candidates for this list. Two-thirds of the score is based on survey responses
from randomly chosen Capital One associates. That survey is designed to evaluate
trust in management, pride in work and camaraderie. The remainder of the score
is based on company responses to the Great Place to Work Institute's Culture
Audit.
"We have developed methods to not only attract and select the most talented
people to work at Capital One, but more importantly to keep them," said Dennis
Liberson, Executive Vice President for Human Resources. "Being named to this
prestigious list four years in a row demonstrates that our entrepreneurial,
performance-based culture is a long-term model for success."
Capital One employs more than 20,000 associates worldwide. Among the programs
that differentiate the company from other employers are the associate selection
process; a number of ongoing training and development courses; outstanding
benefits, including three weeks vacation; and performance-driven entrepreneurial
compensation.
Capital One has operations in Richmond, Fredericksburg and Falls Church,
