He won the popular vote in a finals showdown on www.CapitalOneBowl.com against University of Texas El Paso mascot "Paydirt Pete."

"Big Blue" was officially crowned Mascot of the Year today during the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, besting a talented pool of 15 other Capital One All-America Mascots, bringing glory and $20,000 to Old Dominion University's mascot program.

"We are immensely proud of 'Big Blue' being named the Capital One Mascot of the Year," said Dr. John Broderick, President of Old Dominion University. "His victory not only demonstrates his hard work, but the passion of students, alumni, and supporters of our university. This is a wonderful honor and we are thrilled."

Last summer, 16 oversized fuzzy characters were named to the ninth annual Capital One All-America Mascot Team, and have since been embroiled in a fierce competition to be named 2010 Capital One National Mascot of the Year. Each participating school's mascot receives $5,000 for its university mascot program, and the Capital One National Mascot of the Year receives an additional $15,000 scholarship to help fund its school's mascot program.

"In the nine years of the program, this has been one of the most memorable and spirited campaigns for the Capital One Mascot of the Year," said Roger Ferguson, VP of Advertising and Sports Sponsorships at Capital One.
