|Express Scripts Selects Allscripts to Expand Electronic Prescribing Nationwide|
Prescription Drug Ordering and Processing Made Easier for Physicians, Patients, Health PlansST. LOUIS and CHICAGO, April 26, 2000 -- Express Scripts, Inc. (Nasdaq: ESRX), and Allscripts, Inc. (Nasdaq: MDRX) today announced an agreement intended to accelerate physician adoption of the TouchScript® electronic prescribing solution. Express Scripts will provide physicians who use Allscripts' TouchScript® Personal Prescriber real-time access to current formulary and clinical information at the point of care in order to enhance service to patients, save physicians' time, reduce medication errors, and improve pharmacy costs for health plans.
Online prescribing technology will allow Express Scripts to provide advanced pharmacy benefit tools to clients and to promote important formulary and clinical information to physicians. The companies will provide physicians with essential patient-related information such as potential adverse drug interactions, drug histories, and drug formularies, all at the point-of-care through the TouchScript Personal Prescriber. With pharmacy copayments and formularies growing more complex, the need for technology that provides patients a seamless experience for prescription drug ordering and processing is increasing.
As a major component of the strategic alliance, Express Scripts will provide marketing support and clinical assistance to Allscripts, in addition to service fees based on the number of high-prescribing physicians who use the Personal Prescriber for the majority of prescriptions written for Express Scripts' patients. This relationship is an important part of Express Scripts' strategy to connect electronically to a significant portion of the physicians nationwide who write the majority of prescriptions for its 38.5 million members.
"The time is right, our clinical and formulary programs are proven, and Allscripts' technology is confirmed by the industry as evidenced by the thousands of physicians using the Personal Prescriber today," said Barrett Toan, chief executive officer of Express Scripts. "Express Scripts has done extensive, third party research to assess physician adoption of online prescribing devices and the best way to introduce and promote the technology to physicians. Allscripts is a leader in the industry with strong management, a sound track record, and a "physician/patient solution" unmatched in the industry. Together, we are making a major commitment to provide positive prescribing experiences for tens of thousands of physicians nationwide, and millions of their patients."
“Our new relationship with Express Scripts will help make Allscripts’ Personal Prescriber a ‘must-have’ in physician practices, not only to save physician and office staff time, but also to improve patient satisfaction and safety by enhancing the accuracy of prescribing and dispensing,” commented Glen Tullman, chief executive officer of Allscripts. “We believe that the support of Express Scripts will significantly increase the number of practices using our TouchScript electronic prescribing and medication management solutions.”
Express Scripts is the nation’s largest independent pharmacy benefit manager and Allscripts is the nation’s leading provider of electronic prescribing, medication management and physician connectivity solutions. The agreement between Express Scripts and Allscripts is for a three-year period, is renewable, and provides for Express Scripts to support Allscripts' recruiting efforts exclusively in certain geographic markets.
“We are especially pleased to be working with Allscripts because of its strategic partnership with PlanetRx.com, which is the exclusive on-line pharmacy for Express Scripts,” added Toan. This will make it even easier for patients to save money through the utilization of mail service, since physicians can electronically send prescriptions directly to PlanetRx.com using Allscripts’ Personal Prescriber."
Express Scripts and Allscripts will work together to advance the level of information provided to physicians, such as real-time, interactive drug utilization information through confidential, highly secure data channels. The online information that will be initially provided to physicians through the TouchScript Personal Prescriber includes: drug formularies, patient drug histories, potential adverse drug interactions, prescription drug costs, and patient insurance coverage. Express Scripts formularies are lists of preferred, clinically effective prescription drugs that are also cost-effective. Express Scripts believes that all medication decisions are between the physician and patient; and providing enhanced, real-time access to formulary information between both parties will improve the prescribing experience.
