|BakBone and Sun Microsystems Deliver Compliance Solution with Integrated NAS WORM Support|
|Technology Initiative Streamlines Deployment of Compliance Archiving with Advanced Data Protection to Address Mounting Regulatory Requirements|
SAN DIEGO, May 17, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- For businesses seeking a cost-effective way to preserve data integrity while supporting long-term retention needs, BakBone Software(TM) (TSX:BKB) (Pink Sheets:BKBO) today announced an iForce(SM) initiative with Sun Microsystems, Inc. to deliver a complete compliance archiving solution. Designed to scale to meet the demands of a wide variety of environments, the combined offering is comprised of BakBone's NetVault data protection software and the Sun StorEdge(TM) 5310 Compliance Archiving System. BakBone has added integrated write-once read-many (WORM) protected tape backup support for Network Attached Storage (NAS) environments to Sun's advanced compliance NAS solution to provide customers unprecedented compliance flexibility.
Available now in North America, the Sun StorEdge 5310 Compliance Archiving System will be delivered by participating Sun Storage Elite iForce Partners including Sysix Technologies, Helio Solutions, Dewpoint, and General Microsystems. Partners will be able to leverage joint Sun and BakBone marketing and lead generation programs. End users willing to 'test drive' the solution will receive a complementary initial compliance assessment valued at $2,500 conducted by a participating Sun Storage Elite iForce Partner.
"Customers have been asking for a total compliance solution that is scalable, easy to implement, and cost-effective to deploy -- we believe our customers and prospects can fully entrust their environment to Sun's StorEdge 5310 and BakBone's NetVault," said Bert Condensa, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Helio Solutions. "We are enthusiastic about the business opportunities presented by this technology partnership and look forward to working with both Sun and BakBone to drive revenues for our mutual businesses."
According to Andrew Bowles, director of OEM alliances for BakBone, the collaboration builds upon the collective strengths of both companies' NAS product lines to lower cost and deployment barriers. "The exorbitant expense of meeting records management and retention requirements in today's regulatory environment is daunting, but the financial consequences of non-compliance can be devastating to a business," he said. "By combining our technology strengths with Sun's, we can respond to our customers' compliance demands with a highly economical and powerful alternative to current 'rip and replace' solutions."
BakBone's award-winning NetVault backup and recovery software is offered with the Sun StorEdge Compliance Archiving System platform to ease installation in existing storage environments while supporting integrated WORM tape backup support for NAS devices.
"By combining unique NetVault features such as WORM tape backup with Sun's feature-rich StorEdge 5310 Compliance Archiving System, we can offer customers the flexibility of archiving to both WORM tape and WORM-protected disk, which hasn't been available until now," said Chris Wood, CTO, Data Management Practice, Sun Microsystems. "This satisfies the legal requirements many customers have for multiple archive copies of all their regulated data, and lets customers do this using an all disk solution, or a mix of disk and tape. This solution adds to a growing portfolio of compliance solutions from Sun. We're pleased to be working with iForce partners such as BakBone to give businesses greater, more flexible control over their information assets at a compelling price point."
Targeted at customers affected by Sarbanes Oxley compliance, and in heavily regulated industries such as life sciences, insurance and financial services, the joint offering is ideal for users looking to address the rapid growth of electronic fixed content, along with regulatory compliance rulings around the retention and protection of information. NetVault's WORM tape support combined with the Sun StorEdge 5310 Compliance Archiving System -- which provides WORM protection at the disk level -- gives users the option of using both disk and tape as part of a comprehensive data-retention strategy. In addition, the solution helps ensure data is retrieved quickly and unaltered.
"Enterprise storage capacities continue to grow creating more complexity to manage within their storage infrastructures," said Peter Gerr, senior analyst at the Enterprise Strategy Group. "Compounding these challenges is increased demand to comply with strict regulatory requirements, forcing business and IT leaders to rethink the way they address long-term information preservation and protection. The combination of Sun's StorEdge 5310 Compliance Archiving System with NetVault should have broad appeal to a wide audience since it eases the implementation of network storage as part of an overall compliance and information governance strategy."
