Same-railroad traffic in August 2007 decreased by 7,188 carloads, or 9.3 percent compared with August 2006. Same-railroad traffic excluding GWI's Mexican operations decreased by 4,496 carloads, or 6.0 percent, compared with August 2006. The decrease was principally due to a decline in pulp & paper products traffic of 1,482 carloads as a result of lower shipment volumes in GWI's Oregon and Southern Regions, a decline in farm & food products traffic of 1,387 carloads as a result of reduced grain shipments in GWI's Australia Region caused by drought conditions that negatively impacted the 2006 grain harvest and a decline in metals traffic of 1,289 carloads primarily as a result of an unplanned maintenance outage at a steel producing plant served by GWI's Canada Region. The maintenance work was completed in August. All other same-railroad traffic excluding GWI's Mexican operations decreased by a net 338 carloads. GWI's traffic in the third quarter of 2007 through August was 142,252 carloads, a decrease of 10,347 carloads, or 6.8 percent compared with the third quarter of 2006 through August. Excluding carloads from GWI's Mexican operations, traffic in the third quarter of 2007 through August decreased 6,309 carloads, or 4.3 percent, compared with the third quarter of 2006 through August. Same-railroad traffic excluding GWI's Mexican operations in the third quarter of 2007 through August decreased by 6,743 carloads, or 4.6 percent. The decrease was principally due to declines in farm & food products traffic and pulp & paper products traffic. Historically, GWI has found that carload information may be indicative of freight revenues on its railroads, but may not be indicative of total revenues, operating expenses, operating income or net income. GWI is a leading owner and operator of short line and regional freight railroads in the United States, Canada and Australia and owns a minority interest in a railroad in Bolivia. Operations currently consist of 47 railroads organized in nine regions, including service at 12 U.S. ports, contract coal loading and industrial switching. GWI operates more than 5,700 miles of owned and leased track and approximately 3,500 additional miles under track access arrangements.
