Herbert R. Martens, Jr. appointed to lead National City in Florida;
Timothy J. Lathe to replace him in current Wealth Management role

(NYSE: NCC) today announced plans to capitalize on opportunities in the
company's Wealth Management division by increasing its commitment to the
Florida market.

Herbert R. Martens, Jr. has been named president and chief executive
officer for National City's Florida markets, reporting to William E. MacDonald
III, vice chairman. In addition, Martens will be responsible for exploration
of broad strategic alternatives for National City in Florida. Martens served
most recently as executive vice president, Wealth Management.
Timothy J. Lathe, currently president and chief executive officer,
National City Bank of the Midwest, will succeed Martens as executive vice
president of Wealth Management and will also report to MacDonald. In his new
role, Lathe will be responsible for the Private Client Group, Sterling and
NatCity Investments, Inc. In addition, he will continue to be responsible for
the company's Missouri banking operations. The realignment of Lathe's other
current responsibilities will be announced in the near future.
Martens joined National City in 1995 as chairman of NatCity Investments
after serving as president and chief executive office of Raffensperger, Hughes
& Co. He was elected executive vice president and head of Wealth Management
in 1997.
Lathe began his career with National City in 1981 and has held various
positions of increasing responsibility in Corporate Banking. He was appointed
president of National City Bank of Michigan/Illinois in 2000, following an
assignment in the Multinational Department of Corporate Banking.
