Columbia/HCA Appoints Thomas S. Murphy, Chairman And CEO Emeritus Of ABC, Inc. As Fifth New Director

NASHVILLE, Tenn., May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation (NYSE: COL) today appointed Thomas S. Murphy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Emeritus of Capital Cities/ABC, Inc. to its board, marking the fifth addition of a nationally-known business leader since the beginning of the year.

Capital Cities/ABC, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company, and Murphy is also a member of the Walt Disney Company's Board of Directors.

Murphy was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Capital Cities/ABC for 24 years from 1966 until 1990 before resuming the title in February 1994. He retired from the company in February 1996. Murphy joined Capital Cities when it was founded in 1954, was elected a director in 1957, and was named president in 1964.

In 1990, Murphy relinquished the title of Chief Executive Officer to Daniel B. Burke. He remained Chairman of the Board, and became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer again when Burke retired in February 1994. Murphy retired from Capital Cities/ABC, Inc. on February 9, 1996, when the merger of Capital Cities/ABC with The Walt Disney Company became effective.

He began his business career in 1946 with The Texas Company (now Texaco Inc.) as an industrial oil salesman, and left in 1947 to attend graduate school. Prior to joining Capital Cities, he had several years' experience as an account executive with the advertising agency Kenyon & Eckhardt, and as a product manager and merchandising manger for Lever Brothers Company.

He received a BS degree from Cornell University in 1945 and an MBA from the Graduate School of Business Administration, Harvard University in 1949. Murphy is a veteran of World War II.
