WHAT: The days of telecommunications providers owning the end-to-end pipe are over. Telecom customers seek more control over their communications options and the networks over which they travel -- some of which are carrier owned and some of which are not. For example, enterprise end-users want to deploy voice over WLAN, but are stymied by handset availability and lack of carrier support. According to Forrester Research, Inc. (Nasdaq: FORR), almost half of the North American enterprises recently surveyed are interested in handsets that have Wi-Fi and cellular capability, even though few handsets are currently available. Consumers increasingly expect access wherever they are and the content that they demand. Forrester finds that, despite billions of dollars of carrier investment, wireless consumers' satisfaction with call dependability has declined by 10% since 2002. As consumers and businesses insist on even more control over their experiences, the telecommunications industry must move from a dictatorial mindset and respond with products, pricing, tools and an ecosystem of partners to put the control in the customers' hand.
