Natural gas is formed when the decay of natural matter (plant and animal remains) is exposed to pressure and heat over thousands of years. Natural gas is found in reservoirs deep below the earth’s surface and oceans. Natural gas is an energy source often used for heating, cooking, and electricity generation. It is also used as fuel for vehicles and as a chemical feedstock in the manufacture of plastics and other commercially important organic chemicals. Natural gas is a major source of electricity generation through the use of cogeneration, gas turbines and steam turbines. Natural gas is also well suited for a combined use in association with renewable energy sources such as wind or solar.
However, many towns and cities that need the energy generated from natural gas are located far from natural gas reserves. The transportation of gas can be costly and impractical and as a result we use LNG. LNG is created by cooling natural gas to liquid form (-160 ºC) in which form it takes up 600x less space. The liquefaction process requires the removal of the non-methane components like carbon dioxide, water, butane, pentane and heavier components from the produced natural gas. LNG is clear, colorless, non-toxic, and has been used for over 50 years. When LNG reaches its final destination it is heated back to gas form at a regasification facility before being piped to homes, businesses, and industries.
