CarMax Grand Opens Store in Fort Myers, Florida

Company Celebrates with “Road Rally for Charity” Event

RICHMOND, Va. (June 28, 2012) - CarMax, Inc., (NYSE: KMX), the nation’s largest retailer of used cars, officially opened its first auto superstore in Fort Myers, Fla. today, located at 3000 Colonial Boulevard. The store is more than 45,800 square-feet, employs more than 80 associates and stocks about 300 used vehicles of nearly every make and model.

“We continue to grow our presence in Florida, with the opening of Fort Myers – our 11th store in the state—as well as the future opening of Naples in September,” said Tom Folliard, president and chief executive officer of CarMax. “Fort Myers, and soon Naples residents, will be able to experience our unique car buying experience that is easy, fun and hassle free.”

More than 200 local dignitaries and CarMax associates attended a grand opening event at the Fort Myers location today. The event included a “Road Rally” for charity featuring local television personalities competing in contests, which included parallel-parking and pack-the-trunk events. CarMax donated $1,000 to each participant’s charity, and the winner’s charity received an additional $1,000.

The CarMax Road Rally participants included WBBH-TV sports director Brian Colleran, WINK-TV traffic reporter Alissa Reitmeier, WZVN-TV sports director Brad Shellgren, and WFTX-TV co-host of Morning Blend Show Carley Wegner. Organizations that received the donations were the American Cancer Society of Fort Myers, The Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida, New Mission Systems International, and the Southwest Florida Symphony Society.

CarMax will also be opening a new store in Naples, Fla in September. The Naples, Fla. CarMax will celebrate their opening with an online charity event in September that will donate $5,000 to area nonprofits.

CarMax opened its first store in Richmond, Va. more than 18 years ago after the company surveyed thousands of consumers to find out what they liked and disliked about car shopping. CarMax was designed according to the survey responses, giving consumers what they asked for:

  • Transfer most used cars to the store nearest you

Prospective car buyers can have a vehicle transferred from any CarMax location to the Fort Myers store for a fee. Local transfers are free.
