RICHMOND, Va. (November 22, 2011) - CarMax, Inc. (NYSE: KMX), the nation’s largest retailer of used cars , announced today that The CarMax Foundation awarded $12,500 in grants to Las Vegas organizations to help local youth as part of the Foundation’s Regional Giving Program .
The Las Vegas-area grants, each made at the recommendation of local associates, include:
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada - $5,000 for the Site Based Match program, which connects adult volunteers with elementary school-aged children. These mentor relationships allow the kids to bond with a positive role model, while improving academic success and minimizing behavior problems.
- Street Teens - $5,000 for the Sanctuary Drop-In Center, which is a place for teens to connect with a family member in times of need. When that is not an option, the center provides hot meals, showers, laundry services, employment resources and education referrals to build a life of self-sufficiency.
- Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada - $2,500 for Troop 83’s Light Up the Night program. Each scout has a role in the planning of this night of fun that will host children battling cancer. The troop will learn the process of budgeting, social skills and the importance of community service.
“These grants are going to organizations that provide development opportunities to students that they will remember the rest of their lives,” said Connie Brooks, CarMax sales manager and Regional Giving Program Committee member. “The CarMax Foundation is proud to support these programs that are positively impacting our community’s future leaders.”
The CarMax Foundation’s Regional Giving Program reinforces CarMax's commitment to funding programs that improve local communities. The Regional Giving Program provides grants to qualifying nonprofit organizations that have programs focused on education, youth leadership or wellness. CarMax associates working within each of the regions select the local organizations to recommend for grants. More than $2.9 million has been donated to local non-profit organizations across the United States through this program since it was started in 2007.
