Hansen Medical and Intuitive Surgical Cross-License Robotic Technologies

License Broadens Potential Markets for Hansen Medical's Catheter Control System for Intravascular Procedures

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., – September 7, 2005 – Hansen Medical, Inc. announced today that it has entered into a cross license agreement with Intuitive Surgical Inc. (NASDAQ: ISRG) of Sunnyvale, Calif. Currently, Hansen Medical is developing a new robotic technology designed to provide physicians with precise catheter control to assist them in accessing hard-to-reach anatomy in the chambers of the heart.

Under the terms of the agreement, Hansen Medical has the right to use technologies covered under Intuitive Surgical's issued and pending patents in the field of intravascular approaches for the diagnosis or treatment of cardiovascular, neurovascular and peripheral vascular diseases. In addition, Intuitive Surgical has the right to use technologies covered under Hansen Medical's issued and pending patents in the fields of endoscopic, laparoscopic, thoracoscopic or open surgery, as well as endoluminal applications in gastrointestinal, respiratory, ear, nose and throat, urologic and gynecologic surgery. The cross licenses are co-exclusive in their respective fields of use with each party retaining full rights to practice its technology for all purposes. The agreement calls for Intuitive Surgical to receive an equity stake in Hansen Medical and royalties on future Hansen Medical product sales. Other financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Intuitive Surgical has developed a portfolio of more than 250 issued patents related to minimally invasive instruments and surgical robotics. Hansen Medical has a portfolio of more than 50 issued and pending patents and patent applications principally related to minimally invasive robotic intervention.

“The opportunities to commercialize our technology extend well beyond our initial applications in treating cardiac arrhythmias,” said Frederic Moll, M.D., founder and chief executive officer of Hansen Medical. “The trend of performing procedures percutaneously continues to grow; however, advancements are needed in the control and placement of therapeutic tools used in these procedures. This cross license with Intuitive Surgical, which has pioneered important capabilities in the vascular space, complements our core technologies.”

Dr. Moll, along with Hansen Medical founder and chief technology officer Rob Younge and John G. Freund, M.D., a Hansen medical board member and venture investor from Skyline Ventures, founded Intuitive Surgical in 1995. Russell Hirsch, M.D., Ph.D., Hansen Medical board chairman and a venture investor from Prospect Venture Partners, was a lead venture investor in Intuitive Surgical while he was a partner at Mayfield Fund.

About Hansen Medical
Hansen Medical, based in Mountain View, Calif., was founded in 2002 to develop technology for the accurate and efficient control of catheter movement in three dimensional (3D) spaces during therapeutic procedures. Unveiled at the Heart Rhythm Society's 26th Annual Scientific Sessions in May 2005, the Hansen Catheter Control System (CCS)* includes a robotic catheter manipulator which responds instinctively to commands input to a workstation by a physician. This technology is designed to allow the physician to precisely place a catheter tip for the purpose of introducing ablation catheters to treat hard-to-reach anatomical locations, and maintain stability during treatment of complex cardiac arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation, a major cause of embolic stroke and severe long-term disability.

The workstation is compatible with fluoroscopy, ultrasound, 3D surface map and patient electrocardiogram data. The Hansen CCS is transportable, can be easily moved among catheter lab suites and does not require construction of a specialized room. Hansen Medical anticipates its proprietary system, if cleared for sale, will enhance the speed and safety of catheter-based therapeutic procedures by offering physicians precise control over catheter placement not achievable with existing interventional techniques.
