Spirit AeroSystems Europe Plans Its First Aerospace Manufacturing Facility in Malaysia Introducing ‘The New Spirit’

Kuala Lumpur, Nov. 22, 2007 - Spirit AeroSystems (Europe) Limited, the European division of Spirit AeroSystems, Inc. – world's largest supplier of commercial airplane assemblies and components – has chosen Malaysia for setting up its first aerospace manufacturing facility in Asia.

The initial 242,000-square-foot facility, which will be fully operational in the first quarter of 2009, will be located in the Malaysia International Aerospace Centre (MIAC) at Subang and will initially produce a number of composite subassemblies but has growth capacity for new products and services.

Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato' Sri Mohd, Najib Tun Abdul Razak will officiate the ground-breaking ceremony on Nov. 22 to mark Malaysia's commitment to make investments in the aerospace industry through Smart Partnerships. The project has received ardent support from key institutional bodies of Malaysia like Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA), Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), who have been instrumental in furthering Malaysia's collaborative efforts with Spirit Europe.

“Malaysia is the natural place for us to locate this facility,” commented Neil McManus, Vice President and Managing Director of Spirit Europe. “There is access to a well-educated and skilled workforce and a very positive attitude toward developing the aerospace industry from the Government and people of Malaysia.

“The formation of Spirit Malaysia is a key milestone for us in Asia-Pacific. The country is committed to developing its capacity for science and innovation, and so are we,” he added.

The facility will initially produce a number of composite aerospace wing subassemblies for commercial aircraft and will operate as Spirit AeroSystems Malaysia Sdn Bhd. When fully operational, it will employ in excess of 450 employees in a variety of assembly, manufacturing, engineering, commercial and support roles.

The decision by Spirit to locate its facility in Subang augurs well with the Government's plan to further boost the reputation of MIAC thus encouraging other international aerospace related companies to locate in Malaysia. Spirit has a number of existing supplier relationships within Malaysia and the launch of Spirit Malaysia is seen as a way of further developing and strengthening those relationships.

Building work starts on the site in November 2007 and the plant is due to be operational Jan. 1, 2009.
