LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 4, 2005--Washington Mutual,
Inc. (NYSE:WM), a leading retailer of financial services for consumers
and small businesses, announced today that it has partnered with the
City of Los Angeles to help beautify six neighborhoods and their local
schools in support of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's City-Wide Day of
Service on Saturday, October 8, 2005. In addition to providing the
funds necessary to undertake such a monumental project, Washington
Mutual has encouraged its employees, from across the greater Los
Angeles area, to volunteer at one of the six schools.

about lending a helping hand when the Mayor's office presented the
opportunity," said Wayne-Kent Bradshaw, Western Region President of
Community and External Affairs.
Day of Service volunteers will be working hand-in-hand with city
and school board representatives, as well as with community
organizations in numerous activities such as tree planting, mural
painting, water fountain repairs, area nuisance house clean-ups,
landscaping, community gardens, graffiti removal, street cleaning,
bulky item pick up, alley clean up, cleaning abandoned lots and
Bradshaw added, "This initiative is in line with our Class Acts
Volunteer Program, which last year attracted nearly 4,000 employees,
friends and family to return to school to read to students, help with
art projects, organize supply drives, present lessons on financial
literacy and clean up school grounds."
