SUPPORTING HURRICANE KATRINA RECOVERY; CONTRIBUTIONS TO APPROACH $1
Washington Mutual, Inc. (NYSE:WM) today announced additional aid
to local groups supporting recovery efforts, and that company and
employee contributions could reach $1 million in assistance for
victims of Hurricane Katrina.
$300,000 has been committed to local organizations engaged in
relief efforts, and the company will match $250,000 in employee
donations for a potential total of $500,000 in additional financial
assistance. These contributions supplement Washington Mutual's
previously announced $100,000 contribution to the American Red Cross,
and its $100,000 commitment to the Washington Cares initiative, a
matching fund opportunity for residents in Washington state.
Washington Mutual is also providing 5 of its call centers,
technology, and 500 employee volunteers to support the national
telethon "The Shelter from the Storm: A concert for the Gulf Coast," a
live broadcast on six major networks to raise additional hurricane
relief funds. The call centers are located in Canyon Park, Wash.,
Chatsworth, Calif., Albion, N.Y., Milwaukee, and Jacksonville, Fla.
