Washington Mutual Announces Additional Aid to Organizations Supporting Hurricane Katrina Recovery; Contributions to Approach $1 Million

SEATTLE, Sep 09, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Washington Mutual, Inc. (NYSE:WM) today announced additional aid to local groups supporting recovery efforts, and that company and employee contributions could reach $1 million in assistance for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

$300,000 has been committed to local organizations engaged in relief efforts, and the company will match $250,000 in employee donations for a potential total of $500,000 in additional financial assistance. These contributions supplement Washington Mutual's previously announced $100,000 contribution to the American Red Cross, and its $100,000 commitment to the Washington Cares initiative, a matching fund opportunity for residents in Washington state.

Washington Mutual is also providing 5 of its call centers, technology, and 500 employee volunteers to support the national telethon "The Shelter from the Storm: A concert for the Gulf Coast," a live broadcast on six major networks to raise additional hurricane relief funds. The call centers are located in Canyon Park, Wash., Chatsworth, Calif., Albion, N.Y., Milwaukee, and Jacksonville, Fla.

"We're proud to do whatever we can to help lessen the burden that people affected by Hurricane Katrina feel and to help them get back on their feet as quickly as possible," said Kerry Killinger, Washington Mutual Chairman and CEO.

The company's disaster relief program for customers located in the Federally declared disaster areas include penalty-free CD withdrawals, reduced interest rates on home equity loans, quick approval on personal lines of credit, and alternate payment plans for loan customers including an automatic 90-day payment extension. For mortgage-related concerns, customers can call 800-472-1254 between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. (PT), Monday through Friday, and 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday. For deposit account questions, customers can call 800-788-7000 for assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
