ADVISORY/Washington Mutual to Surprise Bothell Teacher & School With $10,000; Veronica Gallardo & Woodin Elementary Winners in Washington Mutual's ``Give Teachers a High 5'' Contest

BOTHELL, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 17, 2002--Washington Mutual:

WHO/    Washington Mutual Financial Center Manager Jennifer Hughes
WHAT:   will surprise Bothell teacher Veronica Gallardo with $5,000 
        and an additional $5,000 for Veronica's school, Woodin 

        Veronica was a winner in Washington Mutual's "Give Teachers
        a High 5" contest. More than 100 winners from across the
        country were drawn for cash prizes totaling $500,000.

WHEN:   Monday, March 18
        11:00 AM

WHERE:  Woodin Elementary, 12950 NE 195th Street in Bothell
        Room 24

WHY:    The "Give Teachers a High 5" contest is part of Washington
        Mutual's ongoing support for teachers and education.
        Professional development for teachers is increasingly
        considered a critical component for improving schools.

HOW:    Between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31 at financial centers nationwide,
        teachers could enter-to-win up to $5,000 for professional
        development opportunities, with Washington Mutual making a
        matching donation to the winning teacher's school. Washington
        Mutual employees nationwide could also nominate teachers and
        their schools for prize money.

        Winners were drawn on January 15, 2002.


  • Suggested "professional development" opportunities include participating in workshops, conferences and higher education courses; professional coaching or program evaluation; purchase of reference materials, instructional guides and subscriptions to professional journals or similar publications; or support for research, planning and reflection.

  • Last year, Washington Mutual's education giving totaled $12 million, with 50 percent of that dedicated to teachers specifically.
