                          Award Winning Hit Musical

NEW YORK, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Washington Mutual's Big Shot Talent Contest has kicked off and videotape auditions featuring singer/piano players performing the Billy Joel classic "New York State of Mind" are piling up. The contest is being presented with Movin' Out as part of the company's continuing sponsorship of the Broadway musical.

Washington Mutual's (NYSE: WM) Big Shot Live Auditions will take place on Tuesday, October 7th with a live audition/press conference that will be held outside the Richard Rodgers Theatre on 46th Street. From 9:00 - 11:00 a.m., singer/pianists will have their live audition taped for consideration and meet Movin' Out's "Piano Men" Michael Cavanaugh and Wade Preston, who will start the event with a live "dueling pianos" performance. The event will be hosted by WPLJ's Race Taylor.

Videotaped auditions are being accepted between October 1 and October 31, 2003. All videotapes must be accompanied by a completed entry form, available at any NY or NJ Washington Mutual Financial Center (call 1-800-788-7000 for locations). Ten finalists will be selected by a panel consisting of members of the musical's creative, casting, and producing team. These ten performers will compete live at Washington Mutual's Big Shot Talent Contest Finals, to be held at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Tuesday, November 18th.

The contest winner will be selected that day by a panel that includes representatives from Movin' Out, WPLJ Radio personalities Scott & Todd and Race Taylor, and The New York Post's celebrity columnist Cindy Adams. The winner of The Big Shot Contest will win the opportunity to perform "New York State of Mind" live at a performance of Movin' Out in January 2004, and a free checking account with a $1000 balance from Washington Mutual. The other nine finalists will receive a free checking account with a $100 balance.

Movin' Out, conceived, choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp and based on the songs and music of Billy Joel, is presented by James L. Nederlander, Hal Luftig, Scott E. Nederlander, Terry Allen Kramer, Clear Channel Entertainment and Emanuel Azenberg, is the story of lifelong friends through two turbulent decades that change them and the world around them forever told through the choreography of Twyla Tharp and 25 Billy Joel songs.
